Why Design Systems Matter

Jul 31, 2024

For years, I've had the privilege of building and refining design systems for various brands. I still remember creating my very first design system, Sushi, for Zomato. Back then, design systems weren't as popular as they are today. Now, many recognize their importance, yet some brands still hesitate to dedicate designers and developers to this crucial task. It's up to us designers and developers to demonstrate the value of design systems to our teams.

Design systems ensure consistency across platforms, reinforcing brand identity and trust through unified standards. They enhance development efficiency by providing reusable components, accelerating product launches, and fostering reliability and customer loyalty. As brands grow, design systems enable scalability, helping new team members maintain high standards of quality. They improve accessibility and inclusivity, making products usable for a wider audience and fostering better collaboration through a shared language.

In our digital world, design systems allow brands to adapt to new platforms while maintaining their core identity. They support data-driven improvements through consistent analytics and aid in global brand governance, balancing local needs with overarching brand guidelines. Ultimately, design systems empower brands to navigate digital complexities, strengthening brand equity and customer relationships. By highlighting these benefits, designers can showcase the long-term value of investing in design systems, convincing their teams of their importance.

I hope more brands will see design systems not just as utilities, but as strategic products that drive growth and innovation.
